1 Killed 2 Injured in Bronx Street Takeover Shooting

An 18-year-old man was killed and two others were injured after a shooting erupted during a street takeover early Sunday in the Baychester section of the Bronx, according to local authorities.

The violence broke out around 5:40 a.m. at East 233rd Street and Boston Road during an illegal car meetup. Police reported that multiple shooters opened fire, discharging up to 60 rounds into the crowd.

Authorities identified the deceased victim as Werling Mendez, who suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. A 20-year-old woman was shot in the foot, while a 22-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Both surviving victims were transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Following the shooting, three unidentified men robbed two women at gunpoint in the immediate area. In one incident, the perpetrators held a gun to a victim's head before fleeing with her phone and chain in an Acura. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting or the armed robbery.

The incident follows ongoing efforts by the New York Police Department to curb unauthorized car gatherings across the city. In May, police arrested seven individuals following a similar meetup in the same Baychester neighborhood. Local business owners noted that street takeovers quickly resumed despite previous enforcement actions.

City officials introduced a bill last month that would require the NYPD to establish a dedicated unit specifically tasked with preventing and responding to illegal car meetups. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing as detectives work to identify the suspects.
