Bret Michaels Cancels 2026 Tour for Kidney Stone Recovery

Bret Michaels, the lead singer of Poison, has canceled his remaining 2026 tour dates following surgery to remove a complicated kidney stone and the advice of his doctors to focus on recovery.

The 63-year-old returned to the stage on August 21 at The Bowl at Sugar Hill, Georgia, but doctors and paramedics determined immediately afterward that he required more rest. Michaels will take several months off to fully heal and regain his strength, according to a statement on his official social media accounts.

Doctors Dr. Abby Borhan and Dr. Patel explained the decision, citing the challenges posed by summer heat and humidity on Michaels' blood sugar levels, which are already complicated by his Type 1 diabetes.

"We will be pulling Bret off the road for the time being. He wanted to attempt this show, but we feel there is a much-needed period of rest and slow recovery ahead, especially considering the heat and humidity during the summer months and the effect it can have on his blood sugar levels," the doctors said.

Michaels posted a message on August 23 expressing gratitude for the support from family, friends, fans, and fellow musicians. He described a "health domino effect," noting he underestimated the physical toll of his first performance back, including the effects of heat, a coast-to-coast flight, and new medication adjustments on his blood sugar and blood pressure.

"If I could, I would be back out there tomorrow," Michaels wrote. "You’ve gotta know that my energy and my soul really want to play music. Hopefully, I will get this figured out much sooner than later. Sincere love to all … stand strong, rock on and remain Unbroken!"

His doctors and physical therapists have been working with him to adjust medications, including insulin, to manage his condition as he recovers.

The kidney stone surgery took place in July after Michaels endured nearly a week of intense pain. A ureteral stent was placed during surgery, and combined with his diabetes, this complicated his recovery and increased risks during strenuous performances.

Before surgery, Michaels had performed several shows despite the pain, including concerts in Charleston, West Virginia, and Grantville, Pennsylvania, along with a private show at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane for veterans and active-duty personnel.

He expressed disappointment about missing upcoming shows, including the Mountain Music Festival in Tennessee, which he vowed to return to in 2027 or 2028 and promised to make the best performance ever.

Medical experts like Dr. Stephanie Widmer have explained that obstructing kidney stones can lead to severe infections and complications such as hydronephrosis. Prevention tips include staying hydrated and limiting salt intake.
