Bologna hosted Lazio at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara on Monday, August 24, 2026, marking the opening fixture of the 2026–27 Serie A season for both clubs. The match served as the competitive debut for both newly appointed managers, Domenico Tedesco of Bologna and Gennaro Gattuso of Lazio.

Italy national team manager Roberto Mancini attended the match at the Dall'Ara ahead of upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures scheduled for September. Both clubs entered the campaign following major summer transitions and busy transfer periods.

A three-goal victory was required for either side to join Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A standings at the end of the opening week. Heading into the fixture, only one of the eight Serie A matches played over the weekend had ended level.

Bologna manager Domenico Tedesco deployed a 4-3-3 formation featuring Łukasz Skorupski in goal, protected by Nadir Zortea, Torbjørn Heggem, Eivind Helland, and Juan Miranda. Oussama El Azzouzi, Lewis Ferguson, and Jens Odgaard formed the midfield, while Riccardo Orsolini, Roberto Piccoli, and Nicolò Cambiaghi led the attack.

Lazio manager Gennaro Gattuso countered with a 4-3-3 setup of his own, starting Christos Mandas in goal behind Adam Marušić, Danilho Doekhi, Oliver Provstgaard, and Alfonso Pedraza. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Nicolò Rovella, and Kenneth Taylor anchored the midfield, supporting an attacking trio of Matteo Cancellieri, Boulaye Dia, and Mattia Zaccagni.
