Nikola Bartunkova Defeats Anastasia Potapova in Monterrey Round of 16

Nikola Bartunkova defeated Anastasia Potapova in the round of 16 at the 2026 WTA Monterrey Open held at Club Sonoma, Estadio GNP Seguros in Monterrey, Mexico.

Bartunkova, ranked No. 38, overcame Potapova, ranked No. 25, in a hard-court match on August 25, advancing to the third round of the tournament.

Bartunkova entered the match as the favorite, holding a 64.5% implied chance of victory. She has shown strong form this season, with a 24-15 match record and an ace average of 4.3 per match. Potapova, despite a higher ranking and a 27-19 record in 2026, struggled with her serve, posting only 39% first serves in her previous match and nine double faults.

Bartunkova said, "I felt confident on my serve and managed to convert key break points, which made the difference."

Potapova, who had won their previous two meetings on clay courts, faced her first hard-court match against Bartunkova. She acknowledged the challenge, stating, "The surface change made this match very different, and Nikola played very well today."

Bartunkova's rise in the rankings has been impressive, moving from No. 251 to No. 38 within a year, reflecting her rapid improvement and consistency on hard courts.

Potapova has won two titles on hard courts but holds a slightly negative main-draw record on this surface with 98 wins to 92 losses.

The win positions Bartunkova for a deeper run in the tournament as players prepare for the upcoming US Open.
