Canada Retaliates with $20 Billion Tariffs Amid US Trade Dispute https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/canada-retaliates-us-trade-dispute https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/canada-retaliates-us-trade-dispute Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs worth about $20 billion on American goods after trade negotiations with the US collapsed, escalating tensions between the two countries, according to reports on August 26, 2026.

The tariffs, effective since Saturday, target a range of US exports including steel, dairy products, appliances, and farm equipment, responding to US tariffs on Canadian goods such as hockey sticks and tongue depressors.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has taken a firm stance against the US administration, called the US tariffs an "attack" on Canada.

Canadian trade officials said the duties are designed to pressure the Trump administration by focusing on key states, with economists suggesting impacts could be heaviest in parts of the Midwest and Northeast.

Canadian import duties will apply to more than 800 types of U.S. goods, affecting categories from dairy and seafood to steel, aluminum, appliances, and tools as North American negotiations remain unresolved.

US and Canada Trade War Escalates as Retaliatory Tariffs Take Effect https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-canada-trade-war-retaliatory-tariffs https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-canada-trade-war-retaliatory-tariffs Tensions between the United States and Canada turned into a full-scale trade war on August 26, 2026, after Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of U.S. imports following the breakdown of weekend trade negotiations.

Ottawa unveiled levies ranging from 25% to 50% on items including steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, seafood, and toilet paper. The moves respond to new 50% U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods that took effect on August 22, 2026.

Canadian officials framed the response as a necessary defense of national sovereignty following the collapse of talks. The breakdown has threatened long-standing cross-border trade ties between the neighboring nations.

Big E Drops Opa Opa Brewing Company After Nearly 20 Years https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/big-e-drops-opa-opa-brewing https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/big-e-drops-opa-opa-brewing Longtime fair vendor Opa Opa Brewing Company will not return to The Big E for the 2026 season following nearly two decades of operation, after fair organizers chose not to renew the business's annual contract.

Family members who run the Massachusetts-based craft brewery said they received notice on Nov. 5, 2025, that their vendor booth would not be invited back. The decision surprised the family, who noted the 17-day autumn event served as a major pillar of their annual financial income.

Known for popularizing cinnamon sugar rims alongside flavored craft brews like pumpkin and blueberry beer, the vendor had become a mainstay for fairgoers during its 19-year run in West Springfield.

Kroger Agrees to 17 Million Pharmacy Overcharging Settlement https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/kroger-agrees-17-million-pharmacy-settlement https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/kroger-agrees-17-million-pharmacy-settlement Grocery retailer Kroger agreed to a $17 million class-action settlement following allegations that the company overcharged insured customers for generic prescription medications across its nationwide store pharmacies, including subsidiaries like Mariano's. The lawsuit, originally filed in an Ohio court in 2021, claims Kroger failed to factor in lower prices available through its Kroger Savings Club program when reporting its usual and customary prices to insurance providers. According to lawsuit allegations reported by WSLS, this pricing practice caused insured pharmacy customers to pay higher out-of-pocket costs for generic prescription drugs between December 9, 2018, and August 23, 2026.

Plaintiffs brought claims of fraud, negligent misrepresentation, and unjust enrichment against the grocery chain, alleging that insured customers were denied access to lower prescription rates provided to discount club members.

Kroger denied all allegations of wrongdoing and maintained that it correctly reported its retail prices, arguing that Savings Club discounts were available only to customers who paid an annual membership fee. The grocery retailer agreed to settle the litigation without admitting liability, according to court documents and reporting by WXIA.

"The rules for customers going directly to DCM versus those going through an FCM should be identical," Robins said. "There really is no distinction from the consumer protection perspective."

HP Signs Global License Deal for Huawei WiFi Patents Despite US Blacklist https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/hp-global-license-huawei-wifi https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/hp-global-license-huawei-wifi HP, a US-based personal computing and printing company, has signed a multi-year global licensing agreement to use certain WiFi patents from Chinese telecom giant Huawei, the companies announced Wednesday.

This deal marks a notable adoption of Huawei's technology outside China despite the US blacklisting the company in 2019, which restricted Huawei's cooperation with American suppliers such as Google.

The agreement follows a patent dispute among HP, Huawei, and other firms that concluded last fall, allowing HP access to a pool of 2,000 patents related to wireless network connectivity. Huawei was a founding member of the patent pool, known as Sisvel WiFi 6.

New York City Council Scrutinizes Mayor's Pied a Terre Tax Proposal https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/nyc-council-scrutinizes-proposed-tax https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/nyc-council-scrutinizes-proposed-tax A heated oversight hearing took place at New York City Hall on Tuesday after Mayor Zohran Mamdani published a list identifying high-value property owners who may face a proposed annual fee on luxury second homes. The administration proposed a pied-à-terre tax targeting secondary residences valued over $5 million, alongside condos and co-ops over $1 million, aiming to generate $500 million annually for city services like universal child care and free transit. The published list contained nearly one million properties, featuring addresses of high-profile figures such as hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, Woody Allen, Anna Wintour, and Cynthia Nixon, with formal tax notices sent to 17,000 residents.

The retail giant plans to extend this convenience to all Walmart and Sam's Club stores nationwide by the end of 2026, with fuel stations expected to adopt the payment option by mid-2027. Tap-to-pay allows customers to make purchases using eligible contactless cards, phones, or smartwatches, streamlining checkout for groceries, gifts, and everyday essentials.

"Tap-to-pay gives customers and members another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods," Walmart stated.

Customers can also add Walmart, Sam's Club, and OnePay cards to their digital wallets for easier access and payment. Cash Home Buyers Drop as Mortgage Competition Rises https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/cash-home-buyers-drop-mortgage-competition-rises https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/cash-home-buyers-drop-mortgage-competition-rises All-cash buyers are losing their dominant grip on the U.S. residential housing market as cooler price growth and expanding inventory give mortgaged buyers renewed leverage. Realtor.com reported that cash transactions accounted for 31.4% of total home sales during the first four months of the year, declining from 32.3% in the same period last year.

The pullout of cash buyers is outpacing the broader residential slowdown. While total home sales dropped 8.5% year over year during the four-month window, all-cash purchases fell 11.2%. Concurrently, national median home prices grew by just 0.2% annually, marking a significant drop from 1.8% growth in 2025 and the 15.4% peak in 2021.

Realtor.com Senior Economist Hannah Jones noted that shifting market dynamics are reshaping how transactions occur.

Under the new measures, Ottawa will double its existing counter-tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum products to 50%, matching the rate charged by Washington. Prime Minister Mark Carney also announced support programs for Canadian businesses impacted by the friction and extended 50% tariffs to American-made furniture, clothing, video-game consoles, smartphones, and other electronics.

Targeted American sectors include paper products, construction materials, home appliances, and agricultural goods such as dairy and seafood. U.S. trade data shows the Canadian duties cover approximately 6% of U.S. exports to Canada, while the latest American tariffs target roughly 5% of Canadian imports to the U.S.

Oil Prices Drop Over 3% as US Focuses on Sanctions Against Iran https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/oil-prices-drop-us-sanctions-iran https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/oil-prices-drop-us-sanctions-iran Oil prices dropped more than 3% following the US decision to increase economic sanctions on Iran, signaling a reduced likelihood of renewed military conflict.

Brent crude futures fell 3.2% to $89.20 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined 3.3% to $82.21 per barrel. Prices have decreased over 5% this week after the US unveiled new sanctions targeting Iran and entities trading with the country.

The White House described the sanctions as an "economic D-Day." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the campaign represents the "single greatest financial offensive ever," adding that a return to large-scale war is unlikely under this strategy.

Nvidia Faces Test of Customer Diversification in Q2 Earnings https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/nvidia-customer-diversification-earnings https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/nvidia-customer-diversification-earnings Nvidia's upcoming fiscal second-quarter earnings report will test its ability to reduce dependence on a handful of hyperscaler customers amid a shifting tech spending environment, according to reports on August 25, 2026.

The company's rapid growth has been largely fueled by bulk purchases of graphics processing units (GPUs) from hyperscalers such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and SpaceX. These firms consume Nvidia's GPUs to power AI workloads and resell access through their cloud platforms.

In the most recent quarter, Nvidia reported nearly equal revenue from hyperscalers and a broader customer group called AI clouds, industrial and enterprise (ACIE), with $37.9 billion and $37.5 billion respectively, according to CNBC. ACIE revenue grew 31% from the prior period, outperforming the 12% hyperscaler growth.

Oil Prices Sink 3 Percent as US Shifts to Iran Sanctions https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/oil-prices-sink-us-iran-sanctions https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/oil-prices-sink-us-iran-sanctions Global oil prices dropped more than 3% on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as the U.S. government shifted its approach toward Iran by imposing maximum economic sanctions instead of direct military intervention.

Brent crude futures fell 3.2% to $89.20 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude dropped 3.3% to $82.21 a barrel. The decline follows a 5% weekly drop after Washington rolled out new sanctions against Tehran and its trade enablers, as reported by CNBC.

The policy pivot provided relief across financial markets. Lower energy costs helped reduce U.S. bond yields, with the 30-year treasury yield settling at 5.23% on Monday. U.S. equities saw mixed results as the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.3%, while the Nasdaq fell 0.8% and the S&P 500 slipped 0.3%.

Canada Retaliates Against US Tariffs After Trade Talks Collapse https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/canada-retaliates-us-tariffs https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/canada-retaliates-us-tariffs Canada announced it will retaliate against the United States after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, escalating a trade dispute rooted in sovereignty and cultural protection issues, according to reports on August 25, 2026. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney instructed negotiators to walk away from talks, citing unacceptable US demands that threatened Canada's ability to make independent trade agreements and protect its Francophone culture. Tariffs affecting approximately 5% of Canadian exports to the US took effect over the weekend, with Canada planning dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting September 8, 2026, as Carney warned that middle powers must resist economic coercion from more powerful countries.

Carney said, "We're going to hit back."

He further criticized the US for introducing last-minute language that would restrict Canada's trade sovereignty, calling it "a question of sovereignty" and "unacceptable." Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette supported Carney's decision, stating it protected the Francophone community from crossing a "red line." She urged Canadians to support local products as an act of solidarity and nationalism.

Although total sales increased from $3.65 billion in the prior-year period, net income declined to $315.5 million, or $3.50 per share, down from $381.4 million, or $4.71 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share reached $3.53, missing Wall Street's expected revenue target of $5.65 billion.

Core Dick's store locations achieved a 4.9% increase in comparable sales, propelled by broad-based growth across product categories and strong demand during the World Cup. However, the performance was dragged down by Foot Locker, which saw comparable store sales fall by 3.6% during the quarter.

The product, marketed online under Target's seasonal Hyde and EEK Boutique line as the 'Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,' featured an orange and black ensemble paired with a mask showing a grinning mouth with prominent teeth. Critics pointed out that the costume's features, alongside promotional material depicting a Black child modeling the item, mirrored Blackface minstrel caricatures from the Jim Crow era.

Retail executive leadership acknowledged the critical error regarding the product's placement in their seasonal lineup.

"As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry," Target said in a statement. Company officials confirmed the item was taken down from digital storefronts and store locations.

The agreement was announced during Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's two-day state visit to Paris. The project will construct three theme parks near Cergy-Pontoise, roughly 30 kilometers northwest of Paris, on the former site of the Mirapolis park in Val-d'Oise. Led and financed by Qiddiya, an investment arm of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the development is expected to create up to 22,000 jobs, according to French officials.

The theme park concept stemmed from discussions between French President Emmanuel Macron and Prince Mohammed in December 2024 in Riyadh, where both leaders discovered a shared passion for Japanese comics, particularly the Dragon Ball series. Opening dates for the parks have not been scheduled, but construction is expected to span several years with phased openings.

UBS forecasts hyperscalers spend about 4.1 trillion on capex https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/ubs-hyperscalers-capex-forecast https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/ubs-hyperscalers-capex-forecast UBS forecasts hyperscalers will ramp up capital spending to support artificial intelligence infrastructure, with total capex estimated at about 4.1 trillion from 2026 through 2028. The estimate reflects a shift in how cloud revenue is recycled into new capacity.

UBS projects hyperscaler capex of $492 billion in 2025, rising to $1.009 trillion in 2026, $1.447 trillion in 2027, and $1.619 trillion in 2028. Across 2026 to 2028, that would exceed three times the $1.292 trillion spent over the prior six years, according to UBS.

UBS also estimates Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft will collectively spend about 102% of their cloud revenue on capital expenditures in 2026. UBS said the ratio is expected to ease to roughly 99% in 2027 and 94% in 2028, while spending levels continue increasing.

Wendy's Appoints Former McDonald's Executive Amid Falling Sales https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/wendys-appoints-former-mcdonalds-executive https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/wendys-appoints-former-mcdonalds-executive Wendy's appointed former McDonald's executive Tariq Hassan as its new chief marketing and customer growth officer on Monday, August 24, 2026. The executive shakeup comes as the chain lost its rank as the second-largest U.S. burger chain by sales to Burger King.

Chief Executive Officer Bob Wright acknowledged that the company prioritized short-term discounts and cost cuts over ingredient quality, contributing to six consecutive quarters of declining U.S. same-store sales. In contrast, Burger King surged past Wendy's following a $700 million brand overhaul.

Wright detailed a five-point turnaround plan focusing on menu quality, store renovations, digital growth, operational efficiency, and rebuilt core products. He indicated that heavy reliance on promotional deals diverted attention from intrinsic value.

Donald Trump Buys SpaceX Shares After Historic IPO in June 2026 https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/donald-trump-buys-spacex-shares https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/donald-trump-buys-spacex-shares President Donald Trump purchased between $15,001 and $50,000 worth of SpaceX shares on June 23, shortly after the company completed the largest IPO in U.S. history on June 12, according to a financial disclosure made public on August 22.

The shares were trading in the mid-$150 range on the purchase date, down from highs above $200, and closed at the IPO price of $135 on the following Monday, potentially putting Trump’s investment at a loss, as reported by Reuters and other sources.

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said the president’s stock portfolio is managed by third-party financial institutions that replicate recognized indexes such as the Schwab 1000.

Target Pulls Offensive Kids’ Halloween Costume After Backlash https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/target-pulls-offensive-costume https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/target-pulls-offensive-costume Target removed a children’s Halloween costume after widespread criticism on social media that it resembled racist minstrel show imagery. The costume, sold as the "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume," was accused of evoking blackface caricatures due to its design and promotional images.

The product featured a Black child wearing an orange and black top, solid black gloves, and a mask with a wide toothy smile. Critics compared the costume’s elements to historically offensive minstrel show depictions of Black people.

Target issued an apology stating, "As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale."

Trump Administration Proposes $103,000 Fee for H&1B Visas https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/trump-proposes-h1b-fee https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/trump-proposes-h1b-fee The Trump administration announced on August 24, 2026, a new proposal to impose a $103,265 fee on H-1B visa applications for foreign professionals seeking work in the United States. The proposal aims to recover immigration system costs and encourage companies to hire American workers by raising the visa fee.

The proposed fee is significantly higher than the previous fee of about $3,000 and follows a legal setback in June 2026, when a federal judge invalidated an earlier Trump administration attempt to impose a $100,000 fee. The judge ruled that the president lacked authority to levy such a fee, which was considered a tax requiring congressional approval.

The H-1B visa program allows foreign professionals with at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent to work in specialized professions in the U.S. These visas are valid for three years and can be renewed for another three. The program caps annual visas at 65,000, with an additional 20,000 reserved for individuals holding advanced degrees from American universities.

US Officials and Commercial Trackers Disagree on Strait of Hormuz Oil https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-trackers-disagree-strait-hormuz-oil https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-trackers-disagree-strait-hormuz-oil The United States government and independent commercial ship trackers reported conflicting figures regarding daily oil volumes passing through the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing military-escorted covert shipping operations in the region.

Data released by the Trump administration indicated that substantial crude volumes continue to flow out of the Persian Gulf despite ongoing regional conflicts. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said last week the U.S. military had helped ship over 15 million barrels of crude and oil products out of the waterway last Tuesday. He put the average oil exports through the strait over a seven-day period at more than 8 million barrels a day. Earlier this month, Wright said the seven-day average stood at around 9 million barrels a day.

However, commercial maritime tracking services reported vastly lower shipment numbers, placing estimates between 2 million and 6 million barrels daily. The divergence stems from Middle Eastern oil producers chartering vessels to conduct "dark" transits by switching off their AIS transponders to evade Iranian drone strikes. According to tracking firm Kpler, approximately 80% of maritime traffic through the narrow 23-mile waterway has turned off transponders over recent weeks.

Regulators alleged that the two rival apartment-listing portals entered an illegal deal in February 2025, where Zillow paid Redfin $100 million to stop advertising apartments in buildings with 25 or more units. Under the arrangement, Redfin agreed to exit the multifamily market for up to nine years and exclusively display Zillow's apartment listings on its platform.

The FTC and attorneys general from Arizona, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, and Washington filed the lawsuit eight months after the initial deal. Officials stated the illegal scheme harmed property managers and renters through inflated prices, diminished service quality, and restricted listing options.

Trump Waives Tariffs on Imported Ground Beef Sparking Backlash https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/trump-waives-tariffs-imported-beef https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/trump-waives-tariffs-imported-beef President Donald Trump announced on August 21, 2026, that the United States will temporarily allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef imports over the next 90 days without out-of-quota tariffs, a move aimed at lowering retail grocery costs that has drawn swift criticism from domestic cattle producers and agricultural lawmakers.

Under the emergency measure, importers committed to selling the beef at 25 percent below current market rates, according to statement releases on Truth Social. Ground beef prices hit record high levels in April at $9.64 per pound due to long-standing droughts, high feed expenses, and a flesh-eating screwworm outbreak that shrank the domestic cattle herd to its lowest point since 1951.

Defending the temporary policy shift to reporters while traveling to South Carolina, Trump emphasized his goal of lowering food costs for working families while working alongside livestock managers.

Trump Faces Republican Backlash Over Economic Moves and Import Plans https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/trump-faces-republican-backlash-economic-moves https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/trump-faces-republican-backlash-economic-moves President Donald Trump faced criticism from lawmakers in his own party on August 24, 2026, as Republican politicians voiced strong opposition to his administration's escalating trade war with Canada and a controversial plan to flood the domestic market with imported ground beef.

The pushback comes as GOP leaders prepare for upcoming midterm elections while voters express growing concern over rising costs. Tensions intensified after U.S. negotiations for tariffs on Canadian goods collapsed, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to promise dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs.

Simultaneously, Trump announced plans to import 300,000 metric tons of foreign ground beef sold at 25 percent below market rates over 90 days. The policy aims to lower grocery bills, which have seen ground beef prices surge to nearly $7 per pound amid historically low U.S. cattle herd numbers.

Ozon Shares Drop 29 Percent After Ukrainian Drone Attacks https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/ozon-shares-drop-ukrainian-drone-attacks https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/ozon-shares-drop-ukrainian-drone-attacks A series of Ukrainian drone strikes hit four Ozon logistics hubs across southern Russia overnight on August 24, causing the major e-commerce retailer's shares to tumble 29% on the Moscow Exchange.

The offensive brought the total number of damaged Ozon facilities to six within a 72-hour period. In response to the market volatility, the Moscow Exchange temporarily placed Ozon stock into a 30-minute auction mode to limit extreme price fluctuations.

The strikes on August 24 caused fires at several key locations, including a 130,000-square-meter warehouse complex in Dagestan's Tyube industrial park. Additional strikes caused a major fire at an Ozon center in Enem, on the outskirts of Krasnodar, and prompted precautionary evacuations at facilities in Adygeysk and Nevinnomyssk.

US Reopens Border to Mexican Cattle After Screwworm Outbreak Ban https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-reopens-border-mexican-cattle https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-reopens-border-mexican-cattle The United States reopened its southern border to Mexican livestock imports on August 24, 2026, through the Agua Prieta, Sonora, port to Douglas, Arizona, following a multi-month closure triggered by New World screwworm infestations.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the gradual reopening during a press conference in Mexico City, confirming that trade will later expand to entry points in Chihuahua and New Mexico after strict sanitary controls were implemented.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture temporarily halted Mexican cattle trade in November 2024 and maintained a full closure starting in July 2025 to prevent the parasitic fly larvae from infecting domestic herds. The screwworm fly invades open wounds in warm-blooded animals and destroys living tissue.

US Targets Iran Economy with Sanctions Package https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-targets-iran-economy-sanctions https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-targets-iran-economy-sanctions The Trump administration prepared to launch a sweeping economic campaign against Iran on Monday, targeting foreign governments, financial institutions, and commercial entities that continue providing economic lifelines to Tehran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the initiative, framing it as an intense financial offensive designed to sever the remaining commercial links sustaining the Iranian regime, including petroleum shipping and international banking connections. "At dawn begins an economic D-Day — the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary," wrote Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Bessent emphasized that third-party nations assisting Tehran would face severe diplomatic and commercial consequences.

"Any nation that serves as a financial artery of a withering regime should expect to share in its isolation," wrote Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The policy stance aligns with statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who publicly warned foreign businesses and governments against facilitating Iranian commerce.

Stone Brewing to Cut 220 Jobs as Production Moves from Escondido https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/stone-brewing-job-cuts-escondido https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/stone-brewing-job-cuts-escondido Stone Brewing is set to cut 220 jobs at its Escondido, California, facilities as production shifts to other locations in California and Missouri, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filings. The layoffs will start with 58 employees on October 19, affecting workers across three Stone Brewing locations in Escondido, including brewers, packaging, warehouse, logistics, and quality assurance staff. The workforce reduction follows Sapporo USA's sale of the Stone Brewing brand and select hospitality locations to Firestone Walker Brewing Company and Duvel Moortgat USA, a transaction that closed in mid-May.

Under the deal, production of Stone beer is moving to Firestone Walker's brewery in Paso Robles, California, and Duvel USA's Boulevard brewery in Kansas City, Missouri.

Sapporo USA CEO Zach Keeling explained the company is phasing out the Escondido brewery after being unable to find a long-term solution for the property. "This is an understandably difficult time for our Escondido employees and community, and we're committed to supporting them through this transition," Keeling said.

The departure has sparked concerns that the Trump administration might seek a last-minute deal to avoid a March trial addressing Ticketmaster's alleged monopoly.

Slater's resignation comes after a turbulent tenure marked by internal disputes over enforcement and merger reviews, with the DOJ trial scheduled to begin in early March. Reports indicate settlement discussions are occurring outside the Antitrust Division, raising questions about political influence in the case.

US Imposes 50 Percent Tariffs on Canadian Goods After Talks Collapse https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-canada-trade-war-tariffs https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/us-canada-trade-war-tariffs Trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa broke down on Friday, prompting US President Donald Trump to implement 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods early Saturday, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney promising dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on Sept. 8.

The breakdown occurred after Canadian negotiators walked away over last-minute American demands that would have restricted Canada's trade relations with other nations. The trade levies impact roughly 5% of Canada's annual exports to the US, targeting commodities such as wine, paper products, dairy, clothing, cement, and hockey equipment.

Carney criticized the stringent conditions imposed by Washington, characterizing the final demands as an assault on national independence.

Global Stocks Fall as Iran Rial Hits Record Low https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/global-stocks-fall-iran-rial-record-low https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/global-stocks-fall-iran-rial-record-low Global equity markets tumbled and oil prices dropped on August 24, 2026, as investor anxiety mounted over persistent pressure in government bond markets and a record collapse of Iran's national currency ahead of imminent U.S. sanctions.

Trading on informal markets saw the Iranian rial plunge to a historical low of 2.02 million per U.S. dollar, starkly contrasting the official Central Bank rate of 1.5 million. The plunge comes as Washington prepares fresh secondary sanctions targeting Tehran's primary trade partners, further squeezing an economy hampered by a U.S. naval blockade and severe domestic inflation.

Asian indices felt immediate pressure, with South Korea's Kospi plummeting 3.1% to 6,696.96 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipping 1.9% to 25,517.33. In Europe, Germany's DAX and the French CAC 40 both retreated 0.1%, while U.S. stock futures pointed to opening losses across the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Bonta led a coalition of 12 state attorneys general in filing the lawsuit in July, seeking to prevent the transaction on grounds that combining the two media giants would severely stifle competition across the entertainment industry.

State regulators assert that merging two of Hollywood's five major film studios would grant the single entity control over approximately 27 percent of the wide-release theatrical movie market and more than 30 percent of anticipated top-grossing theatrical releases.

Middle East Oil Exporters Escort Tankers to Bypass Iranian Attacks https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/middle-east-oil-exporters-escort-tankers https://achmadnurhidayat.id/en/middle-east-oil-exporters-escort-tankers Middle Eastern oil producers, supported by the United States Navy, have implemented covert maritime tactics to export crude through the Strait of Hormuz, bypassing Iranian drone threats amidst ongoing regional conflict as of August 2026.

National oil companies from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates are chartering tankers to disable their Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders. Escorted by military forces, these vessels conduct dark transits across the narrow 23-mile waterway.

Once reaching the Gulf of Oman, the tankers perform ship-to-ship transfers to deliver crude to customer-owned vessels bound for Asian markets, including China, South Korea, and Vietnam. The strategy transfers physical and financial risks away from commercial shippers.
